Happy to find this series.

Bought this book for our 18 month old son as we live on a small lake. While not a pond (as in the book), I figured it would still be a good reading resource to learn about water animals, insects, etc. Like most children, our son loves Dr. Suess and we watch the PBS The Cat in The Hat so he is well familiar with The Cat. I admit this book may be a little too mature for our 18 month old to fully grasp all of the details BUT it's never too early to start learning, right?? He actually enjoyed the pictures and even picked out the "frog", "duck", etc while I read the book to him for the 1st time. I can see this book being read many many MANY times in the future! Can't wait to look into getting more books from this series.

Excellent children's book

I've been collecting and reading all of the new Dr. Suess Knows A Lot About that series. They are fun to read and my 4 year old is learning some really involved things about stuff you would not think to take the effort to teach them about. For instance in this book, water striders, bugs that breathe from air bubbles, and algae. The great thing is that the sentences are easy enough that I bet he reads the book to me before he is 6. He already has the words memorized from me reading it over and over that he can complete my sentences - so I know he's listening and absorbing the info. He even points to the pictures to tell me what he knows about the insect/animal before I read the page. Great series of books!

No matter how gifted they are at age 4, they still like to keep it fun and silly. This book fits in with our science curriculum and keeps it fun and silly too. :) In fact the whole series has been a real blessing when it comes to keeping science fun. These books follow along nicely with the national science curriculum.

About the Author
Raymond A. Serway (PhD, Illinois Institute of Technology) is Professor Emeritus at James Madison University. His honors and awards include an honorary doctorate degree from his alma mater, Utica College, the 1990 Madison Scholar Award at James Madison University, the Distinguished Teaching Award at Clarkson University in 1977, and the Alumni Achievement Award from Utica College in 1985. As Guest Scientist at the IBM Research Laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland, he worked with K. Alex M�ller, 1987 Nobel Prize recipient. He was a visiting scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, where he collaborated with his mentor and friend, the late Sam Marshall. Dr. Serway is the coauthor of COLLEGE PHYSICS, Eleventh Edition; PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, Ninth Edition; PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition; ESSENTIALS OF COLLEGE PHYSICS; MODERN PHYSICS, Third Edition; and the high school textbook PHYSICS, published by Holt McDougal. He has published more than 40 research papers in the field of condensed matter physics and has given more than 60 presentations at professional meetings.

John W. Jewett, Jr., earned his undergraduate degree in physics at Drexel University and his doctorate at Ohio State University, specializing in optical and magnetic properties of condensed matter. Dr. Jewett began his academic career at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, where he taught from 1974 to 1984. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Physics at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Through his teaching career, Dr. Jewett has been active in promoting science education. In addition to receiving four National Science Foundation grants, he helped found and direct the Southern California Area Modern Physics Institute (SCAMPI) and Science IMPACT (Institute for Modern Pedagogy and Creative Teaching). Dr. Jewett's honors include the Stockton Merit Award at Richard Stockton College in 1980, selection as Outstanding Professor at California State Polytechnic University for 1991-1992, and the Excellence in Undergraduate Physics Teaching Award from the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) in 1998. In 2010, he received an Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award from Drexel University in recognition of his contributions in physics education. He has given over 100 presentations both domestically and abroad, including multiple presentations at national meetings of the AAPT. Dr. Jewett is the author of THE WORLD OF PHYSICS: MYSTERIES, MAGIC, AND MYTH, which provides many connections between physics and everyday experiences. In addition to his work on PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, he is the coauthor for PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition, as well as GLOBAL ISSUES, a four-volume set of instruction manuals in integrated science for high school. Dr. Jewett enjoys playing keyboard with his all-physicist band, traveling, and collecting antique quack medical devices that can be used as demonstration apparatus in physics lectures. About the Author
Michael Law has worked professionally with GIS since 2004 when he began at Rand McNally Canada and later worked as a cartographer for Esri Press, where he developed cartography for books, and edited and tested GIS workbooks. Now based in Toronto, Canada, Law continues to work with GIS software, writing technical documentation, teaching training courses, and designing and optimizing user interfaces.
Law and Collins are the authors of two editions of Getting to Know ArcGIS for Desktop.

Amy Collins was first introduced to GIS in 2002 when she began working as a technical editor at Esri. There, she honed her GIS skills and cultivated an interest in designing effective instructional materials. Now a writer and editor based in Northern California, she continues to develop GIS materials, among other projects.
Law and Collins are the authors of two editions of Getting to Know ArcGIS for Desktop.

Outstanding for a self-taught course in GIS

I just completed a graduate course in GIS and remote sensing, and we used this book as the basic guide to using GIS. Prior to this, I had always relied on other people to "make maps" for me. Now I am not only making my own maps, but also using GIS to perform many different types of analysis for my job. This book was key to that - the course I took didn't really cover much GIS in the class materials - that was focused mostly on remote sensing and researching what others have done with GIS. I've sat through probably a half-dozen GIS "workshops" over the years and never really learned anything. Taking your time with this book, and no one standing over your shoulder and telling you which buttons to click, is really the best way to learn. I liked this book so much I ordered 10 more for my staff, and 9 of them have now completed it, too, and are working on their projects to earn the certificate from me that they have mastered basic ArcGIS use. I've now got a backlog of 15 other employees who want to be in on the next round of training! Very highly recommended!

Handsdown probably the best book to learn and acquaint yourself with ArcGIS

I'm taking my first course in GIS at UCSB, and I decided to get this book to guide me through the learning process of using ArcGis. I just received the book in a very timely manner and I haven't fully put the knowledge to the test, but having read through the first few chapters I can already tell this is going to be a great tool for me as a student.

The writing / Instruction is clear, concise, and well structured. There are fully colored and well-captioned images to facilitate the learning. The fore-edge of the book is color-coded (different shades of green) and thus allows you to access specific chapters with more ease! (I thought that was a nice touch!). The more technical sections of the book offer very useful "Tips" on how to do something and/or avoid common mistakes. A dictionary of the technical terms used in GIS and within Arc is located in the back, which is important when putting parts of the text in layman context.

Overall, based on what I have seen thus far, I would say this book is probably the best bang for your buck on Amazon. I will come back after I finish the class and the exercises in this book to provide a more comprehensive review of the book and its contents.

IMPORTANT: I did not receive a CD with the book. HOWEVER! the key to the 6 month trial of ArcGIS is on the inside of the back cover! Go to esripress.esri.com/bookresources, make an esri account, follow the steps, and use your key there! NOTE: Despite the book being tailored for using ArcGIS, 10.2/10.3, Esri allows you to download the 6 month trial with any version from 10.2.2 up to the most recent 10.4.1 version. Which is a big plus!

Perfect. Exactly what I was looking for.

I needed a quick study guide (lesson) on map building in ArcGIS.
This was perfect. It prepared me for a job interview.

Be careful about starting your 6 month license. Be sure to start it
on the CPU you will have continued access to. You can not un-install
and then re-install on another computer.
