A good ight reading

It is a good light novel which takes you back to your younger days! Try to read it for the sake of a youthful nostalgia! The setting is typically Indian and the author emotes very well as an Indian youth. The author's style of story telling is flowing and his language is befitting the style. The story has its periodic surprises and shocks which makes it an interesting reading. However, towards the end it drags a bit.

If you enjoy reading something youthful, don's miss this novel. However, I don't really know if the novel will appeal to the international reader as the issues are basically Indian by nature.

From the beginning to the end the story of Waiyaki had my attention. His story made me reflect on the relationship that I share with my father. Even though Chege had passed, the goals that he had set for Waiyaki were still valued by Waiyaki throughout the remainder of his life. I would do the same if my father was to pass away and I can relate to it because I am away from home now and cherish the values and beliefs that he has taught me. On another note, I feel as though Wa Thiongo wrote this book in order to put perspective on the colonization of Kenya. We see and understand that Europeans just want the best for other cultures by introducing them to new technologies, better education systems, and different religions, etc... But this book has shown us, that everyone has diff values. The people of Kenya valued their land and traditions and also made the best of their technologies and education. They seemed to be content and overall happy with life. From the inside looking out the Europeans had no right or good reason to colonize and break up the lives of these people.
Overall, I feel as though the book is a good read. It opened my eyes not only to value my family relations but also value other cultures beliefs and ways of living.

Love this series

My son took his first lessons from this series of books (4 in all, Technique - Primer - Lesson - Theory), and now although he's not very old himself, he still teaches from these books (newer editions are out since he used them as a new student).

They are easy to follow and teach from. You could potentially even teach yourself piano using these. These "purple" level books are great for the beginning student. Make sure you get all 4 though.

What is Slavery? is a collegiate-level historical survey that follows the widespread phenomenon of slavery from ancient civilizations to its existence in the United States. Stevenson addresses not only the question of “what is slavery” as a historical concept but also touches upon the current relevance in today’s society. The book is broken down by chronology and topics, on both macro- and micro levels, to build a synthetic narrative on slave life and the institution of slavery. These pages trace the notion that slavery took on a new form in the US, as a race-based phenomenon that was perpetuated by notions of racial inferiority, through social custom and law, in order to maintain the political and economic benefits from enslaved labor. What is Slavery? intertwines the evolutionary changes of slavery and the slave experience with respect to time and place. The first chapter provides examples of different manifestations of slavery over five continents from the ancient world to the sixteenth century. The second chapter shows the geographic, demographic, and industrial expansion of slavery and the impact it had on Africa, the Americas, and the modern world through the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The last two chapters focus on the colonial and antebellum United States. Initially, Africans held an uncertain status in early European settlements and within indigenous groups, but shifting laws and cultural beliefs soon solidified the notion of African slavery, and with it, changes to African identity, family, culture, life, and labor. Most notably, Stevenson details the slave experience of daily living and labor, the struggle for survival, and gender differences, as well as the formation of a free black society and, ultimately, their fight for, and contribution to, emancipation. What is Slavery? is a comprehensive, well-researched, and concise narrative that draws from the most recent historiography on slavery studies. Unfortunately this is not a very helpful book

I had hoped that this would be an extension of Shigeo Shingo's "A Revolution in Manufacturing: The SMED System," but unfortunately it is not really helpful. The writing is convoluted. The translation could be better. I didn't find anything in this book that wasn't explained much more clearly in Shingo's book.
