Mortality improvements, uncertainty in future mortality trends and the relevant impact on life annuities and pension plans constitute important topics in the field of actuarial mathematics and life insurance techniques. In particular, actuarial calculations concerning pensions, life annuities and other living benefits (provided, for example, by long-term care insurance products and whole life sickness covers) are based on survival probabilities which necessarily extend over a long time horizon. In order to avoid underestimation of the related liabilities, the insurance company (or the pension plan) must adopt an appropriate forecast of future mortality.

Great attention is currently being devoted to the management of life annuity portfolios, both from a theoretical and a practical point of view, because of the growing importance of annuity benefits paid by private pension schemes. In particular, the progressive shift from defined benefit to defined contribution pension schemes has increased the interest in life annuities with a guaranteed annual amount.

This book provides a comprehensive and detailed description of methods for projecting mortality, and an extensive introduction to some important issues concerning longevity risk in the area of life annuities and pension benefits. It relies on research work carried out by the authors, as well as on a wide teaching experience and in CPD (Continuing Professional Development) initiatives. The following topics are dealt with: life annuities in the framework of post-retirement income strategies; the basic mortality model; recent mortality trends that have been experienced; general features of projection models; discussion of stochastic projection models, with numerical illustrations; measuring and managing longevity risk.

Treating Trauma: Relationship-Based Psychotherapy with Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults, by Toni V. Heineman

Clinicians working with traumatized youth face many challenges in supporting growth and development while addressing the many negative consequences of abuse and neglect. When working with youth in foster care, additional obstacles must be overcome: changing placements, overwhelmed substitute caregivers, caseworker turnover, complication with birth siblings and family, and communication difficulties with and within the child welfare system.

Treating Trauma: Relationship-Based Psychotherapy with Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults presents a theoretically based and empirically supported framework for work with traumatized children, youth, and young adults who have spent time in foster care. It offers vivid examples of cases from the work of clinicians of A Home Within, a national non-profit focused on meeting the emotional needs of current and former foster youth. These nine case studies illustrate the vital role that relationships play in helping overcome the trauma of chronic, unexpected, and unexplained losses. They describe the work with clients, the collateral work, and also the therapists’ personal experiences of treating this vulnerable population.

This work also explores the impact of secondary trauma on those working in an around the foster care system and addresses ways that therapists and others vulnerable to vicarious trauma can protect themselves, as well as their clients. In particular, three chapters examine the power of peer consultation in sustaining therapeutic work with vulnerable and traumatized populations.

Methods of integrating evidence-based approaches into treatment of youth with multiple mental health problems and unavailable parents are discussed and explored. Essential elements of effective mental health interventions with traumatized foster youth are presented and illustrated.

Review
A Home Within is an organization in San Francisco that provides open-ended, relationship-based therapy for children and youth in foster care; their motto is, 'One child. One therapist. For as long as it takes.' The model has now spread to 24 states. In this book, Heineman, executive director and founder of A Home Within, presents the rationale for the relationship-based approach. Therapists using the approach offer nine chapter-length case studies, plus three chapters on long-term consultation groups that support clinicians. A concluding chapter outlines elements of relationship-based therapy. (Book News, Inc.)

This book is a must read for all professionals, legislators, and policy makers working to improve outcomes for children and youth in foster care. It makes the compelling case for the importance of relational based therapy in creating permanence for foster children in a system that, while well-meaning, continues through its fragmentation, diminished resources, mandates, and bureaucratic structures to engage in a parallel process that can further traumatize youth. Promising evidence-based practices should heed the call this book so eloquently makes for the model of A Home Within. (Bill Bettencourt, The Center for the Study of Social Policy)

This book represents an invaluable contribution to the field and to those of us working clinically in the context of the welfare system from a psychodynamic perspective. Through beautifully written narratives and rigorous theoretical integration, this volume challenges the reader to become aware of the need for an extensive reconsideration of the way in which we formulate and intervene clinically with traumatized children and youth. The authors accomplish this task by using the lens of the child’s perspective and placing the clinical experience in the context of the multiple systems supporting the child in a manner that only thoughtful and experienced clinicians can. This book will be of value not only to both experienced and beginning clinicians interested in working with this population but also to all other professionals in allied fields who seek to give a voice to the experience of these young people. (Norka T. Malberg, PsyD, Yale Child Study Center)

Treating Trauma: Relationship-Based Psychotherapy with Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults is a compelling collection of therapists’ perspectives on how engaged therapeutic relationships can serve as a bridge to self-understanding, trust of others, and healthier lifelong relationships for children, adolescents and young adults who have experienced the trauma of child abuse, neglect and foster care. This collection deepens our understanding of the impact of trauma on personality development. This book also informs mental health and child welfare practitioners who encourage and facilitate positive life transitions from foster care. (Gary Stangler, Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative)

An essential book for clinicians and teachers working in child and youth mental health settings
By Julie Stone
Heineman, her co-authors and the diverse group of contributing therapists writing about their experience in their work for A Home Within offer us an excellent collection of clinically relevant material. The book has something to offer to all those interested in understanding more about the emotional and social challenges facing children and young people living in out of home care/the foster care system. The clarity of the writing, the clear voices of the therapists' and their honest reflections and articulation of the some of the personal and professional difficulties and dilemmas they confront in this work is a rare find: too often case material avoids such reflection. "Treating Trauma" has the potential to be used as an excellent teacher resource for undergraduates in psychology, social work and related fields as well as within post-graduate professional trainings. I look forward to using in my work as clinical teacher and supervisor for child and youth mental health clinicians.

America's Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America, by Jim Wallis

America's problem with race has deep roots, with the country's foundation tied to the near extermination of one race of people and the enslavement of another. Racism is truly our nation's original sin.

"It's time we right this unacceptable wrong," says bestselling author and leading Christian activist Jim Wallis. Fifty years ago, Wallis was driven away from his faith by a white church that considered dealing with racism to be taboo. His participation in the civil rights movement brought him back when he discovered a faith that commands racial justice. Yet as recent tragedies confirm, we continue to suffer from the legacy of racism. The old patterns of white privilege are colliding with the changing demographics of a diverse nation. The church has been slow to respond, and Sunday morning is still the most segregated hour of the week.

In America's Original Sin, Wallis offers a prophetic and deeply personal call to action in overcoming the racism so ingrained in American society. He speaks candidly to Christians--particularly white Christians--urging them to cross a new bridge toward racial justice and healing.

Whenever divided cultures and gridlocked power structures fail to end systemic sin, faith communities can help lead the way to grassroots change. Probing yet positive, biblically rooted yet highly practical, this book shows people of faith how they can work together to overcome the embedded racism in America, galvanizing a movement to cross the bridge to a multiracial church and a new America.

Review
"A thought-provoking plea to white evangelicals and white Christians in general." ---Library Journal

From the Inside Flap
"Jim Wallis has grasped with amazing clarity and insight the persistent pain and sin of racism in America. In America's Original Sin we have not only a recounting of the pain of racism and xenophobia but also a hope-filled cartography for a new, reconciled reality. As a Latino evangelical, I have found in Jim Wallis a key ally and fellow visionary for a racially reconciled America."
--Rev. Dr. Gabriel Salguero, president, National Latino Evangelical Coalition; pastor, Lamb's Church

"Jim Wallis is a clarion voice our nation desperately needs right now, especially the parents and grandparents raising our next generation of children. Only the truth will set us free."
--Marian Wright Edelman, president, Children's Defense Fund

"Jim Wallis is a visionary veteran in the struggle against white supremacy. In this powerful book, he calls for a new conversation and action on the ground--in our homes, churches, sports arenas, and schools--in order to be true to the best of who we are!"
--Cornel West, Union Theological Seminary; author of Race Matters

"Every so often a leader addresses the pressing crisis of his or her day with the clarity, passion, and conviction that offers not only critique but hope that can only be forged in the trenches of faithful struggle and engagement. Jim Wallis has done just that by confronting the injustice of racism in our nation."
--Noel Castellanos, CEO & president, Christian Community Development Association (CCDA)

"We will not get better as a country until we face the sin we've inherited, the sin that continues to wound our brothers and sisters. This book can help us build a better nation by facing the terrible truth of our self-centeredness and the wonderful truth of God's ongoing, redeeming love."
--Joel C. Hunter, senior pastor, Northland--A Church Distributed

From the Back Cover
A book that every white person--especially every white Christian--must read.

"Jim Wallis marches among our hardiest and most steadfast pioneers on the path to a more perfect union and a more vibrant faith. America's Original Sin is a powerful act of Spirit-led truth telling and a loving disruption of the status quo. Wallis calls us to transcend racial categories and to see in one another the image of God. He points out the structural realities of sinful racism and makes clear that to be redeemed, we must do more than deny it. This is required reading for all who believe in the promises of God, hope for the American democracy, and long to see the power of a justice ethos grounded in love."
--Rev. Dr. William Barber II, president, North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP; author of The Third Reconstruction

"I have been waiting a long time for this book. I have been waiting for a white, male, evangelical Christian to say what Jim Wallis has the courage to say. Jim, in his own inimitable way, invites us into a conversation about America's original sin that is long overdue. America, the church, the criminal justice system, and, indeed, all of us, need to engage in the level of truth telling that he is calling for in this book."
--Cynthia L. Hale, senior pastor, Ray of Hope Christian Church, Decatur, Georgia

"Jim Wallis, the nation's preeminent evangelical prophetic teacher and preacher, sends a tough love letter to America, demanding and daring the church not only to repent of the 'original sin' of racism but also to join the fight against all forms of racial injustice. I encourage everyone who is concerned about our democracy and who desires to see the church live out its true mission of love and justice to read this prophetic epistle."
--Otis Moss III, senior pastor, Trinity United Church of Christ, Chicago, Illinois

"In the face of the implicit and often unconscious structures of racism, 'it's time for white Christians to be more Christian than white,' says Jim Wallis. If you don't understand this quote--or if you do--read America's Original Sin. Wallis unpacks for white Americans how we lost our souls, and he maps out the road of repentance to systemic and personal racial healing."
--Sharon E. Watkins, general minister and president, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

"For decades, Jim Wallis has steadfastly spoken, written, and lived as one committed to racial justice and reconciliation. This book is a consummate distillation of those themes that leans back to remember 'America's original sin,' principally to rivet our attention and commitment to a different future. This is a sobering and motivating act of hope."
--Mark Labberton, president, Fuller Theological Seminary

Personal and Powerful
By Rev. Scott Garber, author of the upcoming White as Sin
One Sunday I stood in the church vestibule greeting congregants as they exited. One man complimented me on the sermon and then asked this somewhat unusual question: “How long do you think it took to prepare that?”

“Fifty years,” I told him. That was my age at the time.

The best messages have to steep for a while, and clearly the message of America’s Original Sin has been steeping for quite some time. In fact, a few months ago, Jim Wallis told me that this was the book he’s always wanted to write. I believe he’s been writing it all his life. It’s only now, in the fullness of time, that we’re getting to read it.

This book lays bare the facts about white America’s moral responsibility for this country’s racial dysfunction. These facts are not really in dispute but are nevertheless largely ignored by white Christians. Not any more. Jim Wallis doesn’t just present the facts; he confronts us with them.

America’s Original Sin is not just a reminder of our jaded history or our hypocritical present. It is more than the sum of its sobering statistics. It calls into question the very benignity of whiteness. It reminds us of our biblical commitments. It calls us to repentance.

The repentance to which Jim Wallis points, however, is not simply a cathartic spiritual experience. He’s not just talking about committing to change but about making changes—changes in our relationships, changes in our churches, changes in our politics. And the book is chock full of practical prescriptions as to what that change should look like.

Perhaps the best thing about this book, however, is just how very personal it is. Reading this book feels a lot like having a conversation with Jim Wallis, right down to the de rigueur references to Little League. After a lifetime of listening to and living with minority concerns, Jim offers us the benefit of an experience that few of us will ever have. If we take it to heart, we can change the racial landscape of America.

TWO STARS. AMERICA'S ORIGINAL SIN: RACISM, WHITE PRIVILEGE, AND THE BRIDGE TO A NEW AMERICA (2016), BY JIM WALLIS
By Midwest Reader
I ordered this title pre-publication.

I wanted to like the book; but the truth is that I did not. It was a frustrating read for me. Nevertheless, it gave me a lot to think about.

Through the course of attempting to articulate what it was that troubled me in these pages, I re-read early chapters of Lillian Smith's 1949 classic, KILLERS OF THE DREAM (which was revised and republished in 1961). Hers is the clear-eyed view of the complicated dilemma of segregation in which white Southerners found themselves caught up, written from the empathetic perspective of an articulate writer who was herself a white Southerner. Smith was not a defender of segregation, however. She saw the world as a place where all its children should be able to play together, and grow together, as equals. But she understood intimately the dilemma with which white Southerners lived.

It is this rare but necessary perspective that Wallis' writing seems to lack.

In his engaging "My Story" in the opening pages of chapter 1, Wallis reveals how it was that he gained a sympathetic perspective of African Americans; but evidently he never was able to get beyond his anger to the place of developing a similarly sympathetic or empathetic perspective of the white, racially- and socially-unengaged Christianity that he rejected. Consequently-—or so it seems to me-—that same anger, unresolved, pervades and weakens his ability to communicate effectively with the audience he most hopes to reach with this book: That would be white America, and particularly the white Evangelical Christian America in which he grew up (xxiii; 3-4, 62).

Following are some of the specific problems I had with this book.

1. Although this has been described elsewhere as a concise and focused work, my read of it is the opposite. Beginning with the Preface and Introduction, but not ending there, I had difficulty understanding where Wallis was going with the book, and how he intended to get there; he has a tendency to shift unexpectedly from one thought to another, and to meander around in his thoughts. It might be deduced from the Introduction that the author's multiple purposes in writing the book can be summed up as an exploration of (1) America's racial past, (2) its present, and (3) its future (xxv). It was shortly after this point that he lost me, however; because he surely didn't follow that outline. The first two chapters of the book should perhaps be viewed as belonging to his Preface and Introduction.

There is a lot in this book that is a repetition of what we've already read in newspapers and heard in detail in endless television reporting. Added to that is much that is tangential, lacking in subtlety and delicacy and heavy on harangue. In addition, nearly everything here is borrowed from somewhere else, and not always artfully so. I wondered whether all those rave reviews at the front of the book-—20 of them, not counting more on the dust cover-—were wishful thinking. Reading the book took my determined effort.

2. With a title of "America's Original Sin," I expected this book to present a solid and convincing defense of why racism should deserve to be called my country's Original Sin. I was disappointed by Wallis' fragmented attempt at doing that here. Although page 9 contains a beginning definition of America's "original sin," as Wallis conceptualizes it, any argument to connect it to current racial problems quickly devolves within a few paragraphs. For him the sequence of cause and effect is already obvious, and that's what he communicates (xxii, e.g.; first complete sentence on the page). But stories of encounters with "good cops" and "bad apples" does not connect the racial problems of today to a "system" with roots in a 400-year-old original sin by simply saying it's connected (9). Citing evidence of current racial sin without a more thorough defense of one's basic premise about causation does not make an argument that skeptics are inclined to buy. Convincing Christians today that they/we have a part in a systemic racial sin which goes back four centuries is not a fait accompli (see xv, ¶ 3) when many of the same Christians believe that the shootings at Mother Emanuel were due to mental illness-—nothing more or less.

To be fair, Wallis does pick up his page-9 argument again in multiple partial attempts (37, ¶ 4; 39-40; 45, ¶ 5, through 46, ¶¶ 1-2) and, finally, in a more comprehensive form (~ pp 76-82 of chapter 5), some-65 additional pages after first attempting an explanation of the term. This is a pretty long trek over which to expect to hold his readers' attention, especially if they are reluctant readers to begin with.

3. I hoped that chapter 3 ("The Original Sin and Its Legacy") might lead to the heart of what I expected to find in the book. Instead, chapter 3, like so much of the book, seems excessive in drawing attention to the author. Wallis seems to take personal pride in portraying himself as controversial (33; 34; 37,n.2; 39; 52-3), bringing up that aspect of himself repeatedly [yet taking apparent offense when "charged with being polemical" (39)]. With all due respect to the man and his work, I confess to being put off-—throughout the book-—by the author introducing the ideas of others in terms of where Wallis met those others, how Wallis responded, etc. (See, e.g., 53, 64, 128-9, 190-4.) I wish he or his editors had had the ability to get to the point without doing that. There is no question that writing creatively and writing about oneself with humility is hard to do; but I sincerely wish that Wallis and his editors had tried harder.

4. With all he has to say about repentance-—and with all that America could rightfully be called upon to repent for-—I have difficulty understanding why Wallis should want to spend time asking white Americans to feel his complicated need to repent for being white. By doing this, he may be making the issue of repentance more profound for some of his readers; but I would suggest that he also is making it unnecessarily confusing. Yes, I understand that "whiteness" bestows automatic privilege in this country; and yes, I understand why that privilege is automatic. Wallis goes to some length to explain that whiteness is a “false” identity. But here's the problem: The black theologian James Cone appears to understand Wallis' white audience better than Wallis does. If I understand James Cone correctly, whom Wallis quotes [GOD OF THE OPPRESSED (1975)] in "borrowing" the phrase "die to whiteness" (65, 73), he (Cone) says something quite different in his much more recent book, THE CROSS AND THE LYNCHING TREE (2011). Cone says there that the sin Americans need to deal with is "the great sin and ongoing legacy of white supremacy" (C & LT, 165-6), NOT whiteness. If repentance means turning in an opposite direction, what can we who are of northern European extraction do about the genetics of our skin color? But white supremacy is something which is based in attitude and behavior; that is a sin and legacy we can hope to do something about. Wallis even acknowledges as much when he says, "...(T)he real issue…is the persistence of white privilege, which is…rooted in…white supremacy" (73). A similar problem involves Wallis' activities in Ferguson, Missouri, and his thoughts on a "weekend of repentance" (69-72), all of which seems less than clear to me. Why should he want to include all of this in talking about repentance? Was he arrested, for example, for "an act of repentance" (72) or for trying to shame a police force into changing the way they operated? I can understand the concept of standing in solidarity with the oppressed, and perhaps that's essentially what Wallis was trying to illustrate.

I have other problems with this work, but I will stop with the above.

It remains to be seen whether white Christians will receive what Wallis has to say here. There is a lot, in my opinion, about the roots of white economic power and white privilege and white entitlement that white America, and contemporary white Evangelical Christian America in particular, probably have never had occasion to learn or to be aware of. I am no longer young, and that has been true of me until in very recent years. They might get some of that if they persevere with the book.

I learned some things while reading this, and other books along with it, that I didn't know or appreciate before. I had not known, for example, that the GI Bill of Rights was inequitably administered to black and white veterans after WW II. This was obviously a critical obstacle to black upward mobility. It may be historically at-least-as-important a factor in maintaining white privilege as has been the historical pitting of lower-class whites against impoverished blacks by white elites in order to prevent the poor of both races from joining forces in attempting to improve their socioeconomic situation. Additionally, I had not realized that "states' rights" advocacy-—something heard expressed so frequently these days-—was a euphemism for "stop getting in the way of white privilege and white supremacy," which it evidently was and is. Lastly, for including the quote, "Talking is not the same thing as being heard" (124), I thank Wallis. It has profound implications.

To readers who are able to see beyond the faults over which I have taken issue with Wallis' book and are able to view it in a more favorable light, I say, "Good for you."

Interestingly, another book with the same main title—AMERICA'S ORIGINAL SIN: ABSOLUTION & PENANCE, by Arthur I. Montoya—was published in 2011. Although not entirely without faults, it is well-organized, informative, and relatively concise and thorough in demonstrating how slavery in America led to America's current racial problems. Montoya's answer to those problems may be too simplistic, but he states it clearly in four brief concluding pages.

For readers who have not yet bought Wallis' book-—and anyone interested-—I recommend several other books that deal with how we got to where we are. I recommend reading Isabel Wilkerson's carefully researched and wonderfully written THE WARMTH OF OTHER SUNS (2010), and Bryan Stevenson's invigorating JUST MERCY (2011); then Michele Alexander's THE NEW JIM CROW (2010)-—not an easy read but an especially valuable one at this present juncture in American life. I recommend Danielle McGuire's AT THE DARK END OF THE STREET: BLACK WOMEN, RAPE AND RESISTANCE-—A NEW HISTORY OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT FROM ROSA PARKS TO THE RISE OF BLACK POWER (2010), and Congressman John Lewis' WALKING WITH THE WIND (1998). If given a choice between reading the book TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE, written about Solomon Northrup, and seeing the motion picture film by the same name [critiqued by Wallis (37-8)], I recommend the former. (The latter is, in my opinion, a depiction of violence for the sake of violence and-—for reasons that only the film makers know-—does not come close to representing the book fairly. There is sufficient violence portrayed in the book.) Finally, for those who cannot afford to buy or borrow any of these books, and for those who can, I recommend from the Equal Justice Initiative (www.eji.org) a free copy of 58-page SLAVERY IN AMERICA (2013) and 88-page LYNCHING IN AMERICA: CONFRONTING THE LEGACY OF RACIAL TERROR (2015). Both help to draw the line of causality from white supremacy of America's slave-holding era down to America's present legacy of racial inequality; the latter includes mention of the psychological harm that extends to the white American community (67-73), which is our own legacy.

Don't just read: follow
By Philotheopoiea
Jim Wallis is good at pulling together detail and insight to help people understand the theological roots and wings of public issues. He's done that in several books now and this book is extremely timely given the recent unveiling of the depths of both personal and structural racism in the United States. There are a lot of books out there more informative about the politics of race and there are a lot of theological constructions around racial justice that have been written by superb theologians; Wallace draws on both kinds of books to fulfill a relatively rare role as a white man speaking primarily to white people about a spiritual approach to dismantling our racist social structure. Theologically, I have a couple of minor bones to pick. (For example, I wonder if the role played by shame in sustaining racism needs a fuller theological response.) But this book is an informative and useful blend of public theology and spiritual discipline and worth reading and using as a guide.

Highly Recommended

I've been a post-production sound engineer for more than twenty years, and I am also a trainer. As the latter, I find the exercises to be a very effective way to teach the art of mixing. They move at an excellent pace, and give the beginner a fantastic opportunity to learn about EQ, dynamics, time-based effects and various special effects, and how they are used within a mix. There is also a chapter on advanced dynamics for the intermediate user, some very useful chapters on automation and stereo enhancement, and some great tips on how to achieve an interesting and dynamic mix. All in all, an excellent, hands-on training manual, which is especially useful for the kinesthetic, rather than theoretical, learner.

Morbidly Obese
By Arm ache
The 18th edition of Nelson is horrifically overweight: difficult to handle and unwieldy and the reference ranges are gone. The 17th edition was a much better size.

Please authors/editors- a strict diet is required before any forthcoming editions... a general textbook is not meant to be exhaustive on every subject- there are specialty texts for that. So for goodness sakes, trim the fat next time round !

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Miami Herald • Newsday • The Huffington Post • Financial Times • GQ • Slate • Men’s Journal • Washington Examiner • Publishers Weekly • Kirkus Reviews • National Post • The Toronto Star • BookPage • Bookreporter

“I wanted the lettuce and eggs at room temperature . . . the butter-and-sugar sandwiches we ate after school for snack . . . the marrow bones my mother made us eat as kids that I grew to crave as an adult. . . . There would be no ‘conceptual’ or ‘intellectual’ food, just the salty, sweet, starchy, brothy, crispy things that one craves when one is actually hungry. In ecstatic farewell to my years of corporate catering, we would never serve anything but a martini in a martini glass. Preferably gin.”

Before Gabrielle Hamilton opened her acclaimed New York restaurant Prune, she spent twenty fierce, hard-living years trying to find purpose and meaning in her life. Above all she sought family, particularly the thrill and the magnificence of the one from her childhood that, in her adult years, eluded her. Hamilton’s ease and comfort in a kitchen were instilled in her at an early age when her parents hosted grand parties, often for more than one hundred friends and neighbors. The smells of spit-roasted lamb, apple wood smoke, and rosemary garlic marinade became as necessary to her as her own skin.

Blood, Bones & Butter follows an unconventional journey through the many kitchens Hamilton has inhabited through the years: the rural kitchen of her childhood, where her adored mother stood over the six-burner with an oily wooden spoon in hand; the kitchens of France, Greece, and Turkey, where she was often fed by complete strangers and learned the essence of hospitality; the soulless catering factories that helped pay the rent; Hamilton’s own kitchen at Prune, with its many unexpected challenges; and the kitchen of her Italian mother-in-law, who serves as the link between Hamilton’s idyllic past and her own future family—the result of a difficult and prickly marriage that nonetheless yields rich and lasting dividends.

Blood, Bones & Butter is an unflinching and lyrical work. Gabrielle Hamilton’s story is told with uncommon honesty, grit, humor, and passion. By turns epic and intimate, it marks the debut of a tremendous literary talent.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, March 2011: Gabrielle Hamilton's memoir, Blood, Bones & Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef, is just what a chef's story should be--delectable, dripping with flavor, tinged with adrenaline and years of too-little sleep. What sets Hamilton apart, though, is her ability to write with as much grace as vitriol, a distinct tenderness marbling her meaty story. Hamilton spent her idyllic childhood on a wild farm in rural Pennsylvania with an exhilarant father--an artist and set builder--and French mother, both "incredibly special and outrageously handsome." As she entered her teens, however, her family unexpectedly dissolved. She moved to New York City at 16, living off loose change and eating ketchup packets from McDonald’s; worked 20-hour days at a soulless catering company; traveled, often half-starved, through Europe; and cooked for allergy-riddled children at a summer camp. The constant thread running through this patchwork tale, which culminates with the opening of her New York City restaurant, Prune, is Hamilton's slow simmering passion for cooking and the comfort it can bring. "To be picked up and fed, often by strangers, when you are in that state of fear and hunger, became the single most important food experience I came back to over and over," Hamilton writes, and it's this poignant understanding of the link between food and kindness that makes Blood, Bones & Butter so satisfying to read. --Lynette Mong

Guest Reviewer: Anthony Bourdain on Blood, Bones, and Butter

Anthony Bourdain is the author of the novels Bone in the Throat and Gone Bamboo, in addition to the bestseller Kitchen Confidential and A Cook's Tour. His work has appeared in the New York Times and The New Yorker, and he is a contributing authority for Food Arts magazine. He is also the host of the Emmy Award-winning television show No Reservations.

Very quickly after meeting Gabrielle Hamilton, I understood why she was a terrific and much-admired chef. I knew that her restaurant, Prune, was ground-breaking, that she seemed to have come out of nowhere, instead of being a product of the "system" (she'd emerged from the invisible subculture of catering), to open one of the most quirky, totally uncompromising, and quickly-embraced restaurants in New York City. Her purportedly (but not really) Franco-phobic menus were intensely, notoriously personal, her early embrace of the nose-to-tail attitude was way, way ahead the times, and chefs--all chefs--seemed to like and respect her. Almost as quickly, it became apparent that this chef could write.

Short pieces appeared here and there over the years and they were sharp, funny, incisive, unsparing of both author and subjects--straight to the point and pretense-free, like Hamilton herself. She could write really well. And she had, from all accounts, a story to tell. So when it was announced that Blood, Bones, and Butter was in the works, I was very excited.

It was a long wait.

Five years later, I finally got my hands on an advance copy and eagerly devoured it. It was of course brilliant. I expected it to be. But I wasn't prepared for exactly how goddamn brilliant the thing was, or how enchanted, difficult, strange, rich, inspiring and just plain hard her life and career--her long road to Prune--had been. I was unprepared for page after page of such sharp, carefully-crafted, ballistically-precise sentences. I was, frankly, devastated. I put this amazing memoir down and wanted to crawl under the bed, retroactively withdraw every book, every page I'd ever written. And burn them.

Blood, Bones, and Butter is, quite simply, the far-and-away best chef or food-genre memoir...ever. EVER. It certainly kicked the hell out of my Kitchen Confidential, which suddenly, in a second, felt shallow, sophomoric and ultimately lightweight next to this...this monster of a book, this--at times--truly hardscrabble life…Blood, Bones, and Butter is deeper, better written, more hardcore, more fully fleshed-out; a more well-rounded story than every sunflower-and-saffron account of soft-core food porn in France. It's as bullshit and pretense-free as AJ Leibling--and at least as well written, but more poignant, romantic--even thrilling.

It makes any "as told to" account of famous chef's lives look instantly ludicrous and bloodless. I've struggled to think of somebody/anybody who's written a better account of the journey to chefdom and can't think of anyone who's come even close.

Writing a memoir of one's life as a chef--or even writing about one's relationship with food--has, with the publication of this book, become much more difficult. Hamilton has raised the bar higher than most of us could ever hope to reach. This book will sell a gazillion copies. It will be a bestseller. It will be an enduring classic. It will inspire generation after generation of young cooks, and anyone who really loves food and understands the context in which it is best enjoyed, NOT as some isolated, over-valued object of desire, but as only one important aspect of a larger, richer spectrum of experiences. Each plate of food--like the menu at Prune--is the end result of a long and sometimes very difficult struggle.

Read this book and prepare to clean your system of all that's come before. It's a game-changer and a truly great work by a great writer and great chef.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Owner and chef of New York's Prune restaurant, Hamilton also happens to be a trained writer (M.F.A., University of Michigan) and fashions an addictive memoir of her unorthodox trajectory to becoming a chef. The youngest of five siblings born to a French mother who cooked "tails, claws, and marrow-filled bones" in a good skirt, high heels, and apron, and an artist father who made the sets for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus, Hamilton spent her early years in a vast old house on the rural Pennsylvania–New Jersey border. With the divorce of her parents when she was an adolescent, the author was largely left to her own devices, working at odd jobs in restaurants. Peeling potatoes and scraping plates-"And that, just like that, is how a whole life can start." At age 16, in 1981, she got a job waiting tables at New York's Lone Star Cafe, and when caught stealing another waitress's check, she was nearly charged with grand larceny. After years of working as a "grunt" freelance caterer and going back to school to learn to write (inspired by a National Book Foundation conference she was catering), Hamilton unexpectedly started up her no-nonsense, comfort-food Prune in a charming space in the East Village in 1999. Hamilton can be refreshingly thorny (especially when it comes to her reluctance to embrace the "foodie" world), yet she is also as frank and unpretentious as her menu-and speaks openly about marrying an Italian man (despite being a lesbian), mostly to cook with his priceless Old World mother in Italy. From Booklist
The book’s subtitle should arouse interest. How was the author’s education inadvertent? What is the reason she was reluctant to become a chef? All will become clear upon completion of the final page of this lusty, rollicking, engaging-from-page-one memoir of the chef-owner of Prune restaurant in New York’s East Village. Hamilton opened her eating establishment without any prior experience in cheffing, but the life experiences she did have before that bold move, told here in honest detail, obviously made up for any deficiencies in heading up a restaurant and also provide material for an electric story that is interesting even if the author hadn’t become the chef-owner of a successful restaurant. An idyllic childhood turned sour when her parents divorced; her adolescence and young womanhood encompassed drugs, menial jobs, and lack of direction and initiative when it came to continued education. All’s well that ends well, however, and her story does indeed do that. Add this to the shelf of chef memoirs but also recommend it to readers with a penchant for forthright, well-written memoirs in general. --Brad Hooper

Meh.
By love that Brooklyn
I was really hoping to like this memoir given all the rave reviews, but I just couldn't. I always felt like Ms. Hamilton was showing the reader how amazingly cool she was, from childhood to adolescence to adulthood to success. Her style of writing in so many instances was a wee bit trite and too forced, often using adjective after adjective after... (well you get the point) even when something simple and straightforward would suffice. I stopped 3/4 of the through. Heat, Kitchen Confidential, Comfort Me with Apples, Momofuku, all engaged me so much more than Blood, Bones, and Butter (which is indeed a kick ass title). With all due respect, Gabrielle Hamilton interviews so much better (thinking of her on PBS' The Mind of a Chef) in person than her writing on paper.

Like the book but not the author
By sas
This memoir of the making of a chef is for the most part beautifully written. So many descriptions are lovely especially in the first part, "Blood", where the author recounts her young years. Her memories of her mother are especially tender - "I remember the smell of the sulphur every morning as she lit a match to warm the tip of her black wax pencil." Or, "I sat in that woman's aproned lap every single night of my young life, so close to the sounds and smells of her that I still know her body as if it were my own." The portrayals of her father's lamb roasts are classic. Once the family disintegrates and Ms. Hamilton is more or less abandoned by both parents, she, and the book, lose her special freshness of observation and story-telling and a bitter, angry tone dominates.

In the next part, "Bones", as she comes into her own slowly as a chef, and as other reviewers have noted, Ms. Hamilton trashes nearly everyone and everything she comes into contact with - fellow students in a writing class, other female chefs, catering companies, people she works for and with, suppliers etc. While clever and often funny in her criticisms, the premise that she is the only one who knows how to do things right, no matter what the issue, grates. Yes, successful chefs must be demanding of themselves and egotistical [as in most fields] but she continually exudes a superiority complex coupled with a martyrdom problem [how many times did she say she had to nurse her infants and cook and clean and get no sleep and be on her feet all day and...].

Most off-putting of all is her unrelenting bitterness and dreadful relationship with those supposedly closest to her: her father drifts out of the book completely in the early pages, she visits her mother once in 20 years and is incapable, as others have noted, of compassion or forgiveness and most appallingly shows no sadness at the death of a brother. Does she have friends? It seems so but even she notes that her moods are so volatile especially when her "blood sugar" is down that everyone is more than a little afraid of her. Her marriage is depressing as it seems to be one of convenience so her Italian husband can get a green card; does she love him? We never know. She writes a little of the worshipful adoration she holds for her two sons - shouldn't those feelings help her to mature by the end of the book to develop those softer human qualities that give essence to a richer, happier life? She never truly reveals who she is or who those around her are. She never digs into her feelings to understand her behavior.

The last part of the book, "Butter", is too long and repetitious as we go again and again to Italy and eat the same meals over and over. She doesn't even learn Italian so she can converse with her husband's family! - how telling when she laments near the end that, "If I don't come back...I will not be missed, and no one will write me or call me to acknowledge my absence."

Ms. Hamilton has great talent as a writer, and I'm sure she's a great chef; she's succeeded in those realms. Now maybe she can work on herself and become a more tolerant, nicer person. Now THAT would be accomplishment!

Ultimately, a very sad book
By Cissa
I loved the cooking parts of this book. Hamilton described them interestingly and well. The chapters on professional catering alone are worth a read-0 one can easily why so much catered food ends up dismal, even when the basic ideas are sound.

Cooking is clearly Hamilton's passion in life, and she writes the best when she writes about it, whether as a chef, a home cook, or an eater.

The rest of the book, though, was sad. Hamilton has apparently not had good fortune with relationships, and one can see why: she is not especially self-aware, let alone being able and willing to have much empathy for others. Fair enough; most people who have over-riding passions in their lives tend to scant all other aspects of their lives. However, I think they would be best-advised to keep their memoirs focused on their passions, then, rather than much about the other aspects of life which tend to leave them baffled. Hamilton has a very tough shell, and somehow manages to say even pretty unfavorable things about herself without making me feel like she's taking me into her confidence.

Given that Hamilton has an MFA in writing, I was surprised at how disjointed this memoir was. I've read similarly disjointed memoirs, but they are usually "as told to" books that are in essence stream-of-consciousness storytelling, brought somewhat into shape by the co-writer (the one with the training). I got the feeling that Hamilton was trying to make some sort of point with all the jumping around in space and time... but I have no idea what that point was.

The cooking parts make this work. The rest could have used more insight, more compassion for herself and others, and more generosity of spirit... and, perhaps, somewhat less of a hard shell.
