The bible in non-classical logic...

Priest does a wonderful job in explaining a surprisingly wide spectrum of non-classical logics, with a crystal-clear style, from both the mathematical and the philosophical point of views.

For those who are only used to classical logic, this book is simply illuminating.

Some points need to be improved though : the list of symbols is missing and the index is far from complete...

The difficulty of part II is not due so much to the intrinsic intricacies but mostly to the constant need to review the corresponding chapters of part I... But this is unavoidable if one wants to include quantifiers and identity... And, here again, Priest does a terrific job in unifying the underlying concepts of possible-worlds semantics.

This book now stands in my list of outstanding books on logic :

1. A. Tarski's "Introduction to Logic", a jewel, followed by P. Smith's superb entry-point "An introduction to Formal logic" and the lovely "Logic, a very short introduction" by Graham Priest

2. D. Goldrei's "Propositional and Predicate calculus"

3. Wilfrid Hodges' "Logic", followed by Smullyan's "First-order logic".

4. P. Smith's "An introduction to G�del's theorems".

5. Kleene's "Introduction to metamathematics" & "Mathematical Logic".

6. G. Priest's " Introduction to non-classical logic".

Hence forgetting altogether Van Dalen's indigestible "Logic & Stucture" as well as
the even more indigestible Enderton, Mendelson & al...

Glad I read it

I've had this book on my shelf for a while, and I'm glad I finally read it. It is clear, organized, and well-written. Each chapter covers a different system of logic and has: some background motivation, the definitions and explanation of the semantics, worked examples using tableaux to visualize the logic, and some philosophical discussion. There is a lot of material, but it is not at all overwhelming.

Before he knows it, he's forced into the unenviable position of assuming leadership over his community, or what's left of it, and fighting on multiple fronts against the forces of the evil undead, neighboring marauders, and assassins of a Shadow Government with a secret, 200-year-old New World Order Eugenics plan. Of course, that plan of theirs doesn't include him and his, so this Marine does what all Marines do best: He kicks ass without bothering to take names, and along the way he happens to fall into the clutches of a girl or three. Women can be very demanding. Even during a Zombie Apocalypse!

Jay is a dedicated self-styled player who gets lucky more often than not, and has a soft spot for children. As one of ‘those survivalists' they always talk about on the news, he's better prepared than most when the shit hits the fan. During the coming days and weeks, he will be forced through circumstances to grow up (reluctantly) and does his utmost to save his community from the forces of the secret Shadow Government, while melding close friends, survivors, and salvaged military units on the run into a force to be reckoned with! But it isn't over yet, because Jay is a Marine, and he has a few tricks up his sleeve which he fully intends to implement while accumulating as many girlfriends as possible.

This series will have you laughing hysterically at Jay's womanizing antics, then crying like a baby during scenes of heartrending tragedy and sacrifice. It will also make you cheer when and if the forces of good triumph over those of evil. Written with the help of a medical doctor and a doctor of psychology, along with survivalist friends of all stripes, the scenes you read inside are what would really happen in an endgame situation with a comedic spin to it.

This book is a testament to what good men can do when doing nothing simply isn't an option! The trick is to act quickly and decisively. Being a Marine also helps, of course!

It was a good story that I will continue with. It was however too predictable at times. And too over the top sexual stamina, boob size and instantly in love wise. I did like most of the characters though. But...my opinion is made in a non zombie filled world.

but I loved delving back into the world of Gallagher Girls

It has been four years and a thousand books since I’ve read it, but I loved delving back into the world of Gallagher Girls; in fact, now I feel like I appreciate the nuances of the book more. Back when I had read it, I considered it as a light-hearted fun novel about teenage spies and the trouble they get into, but now I see how varied the theme of the book was. Sure, it starts out as fun – Cammie and her friends, Bex and Liz, are now sophomores at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Women, a school for geniuses training in espionage, and now they get to do Covert Ops. There is a new girl in school – Macey McHenry, whom they do not know yet but is soon going to be their best friend. And on their first mission out in town, Cammie gets her first taste of normal life in Josh, a cute regular guy who notices her, despite her being very good at going unnoticed. What begins as a side project to find if he is shady soon develops into a struggle in Cammie’s heart.

While the tone of the novel is mostly jovial and the fact that the protagonist is a little boy-crazy on getting her first boyfriend, the book goes further into why Cammie is attracted to Josh. He presents a normality she has never experienced being a part of Gallagher Academy; she decisively gets to choose between her life and this picket-fence picture. All her life, she has been known as the daughter of a missing (possibly dead) agent, and here out in the real world, nobody knows that. She gets lost in her legend for a bit, but soon hard decisions have to be made, and she commits to her life as a covert operative.

Most importantly, even with the seriousness of the life as a spy and the danger it comes with, Carter infuses joy and simplicity by bringing it in a group of genius girls who have way too many skills, and a lot of love for each other. It is cute, certainly, but also slightly grim. Overall, the book is brilliant and the extra epilogue was a treat.

Prep school princess or kick-butt spy?

I'm a middle school librarian and bought this to replace an often checked-out, worn-out and probably eventually lost copy of the book my school had. The kids love this book! It's about Cammie, who is a student at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women, a scool that is supposed to be for geniuses but is actually a school for spies. Cammie loses it when she meets an ordinary, cute boy, even though she knows how to kill a man seven different ways and speaks 14 languages. This book is sort of "Princess Diaries" cute like that; you really like Cammie and (kid or grown up) you are cheering for her to catch the bad guys and catch the boy, too.

The first book in an absolutely amazing series! This series is by far my favorite books in the world! If you thought this book was a little frivolous, be assured that the series gets intense and less "teen" specific. Give it a go and if you wish it was more intense, keep going into the next book and it'll get there I promise!

Will get the job done.

First of all, I hope most of us agree that MOC is nothing but meaningless ritual that is somehow being tied to quality of the physician. Nothing could be farther than the truth. Having said that, I took my Peds recert last month and passed easily with a very high score. Of note, I am a sub-specialist and have not practiced General Peds in 15 years but according to ABP, I am a high quality pediatrician and all hospitals/insurance companies believe that.
I only read this book a couple of times and did 1 year of PREP questions. Total time spent (50 hrs). This book pretty much outlines most of the archaic trick questions board has been asking on exams for decades with little relevance to clinical practice. Once you go through this book, you can spot them from a mile away on exams. On the negative side the book is a little too big and thick and some details are wrong. If in doubt consult a text book. The best, most comprehensive, and efficient tool to passing your pediatric boards...

I used this book as my primary study tool to pass the recent 2014 General Pediatric Board Certifying Exam on my first attempt. Though not lightweight at nearly 1,000 pages it provided a singular resource to glean exam pearls and commonly tested information to be successful on exam day. Let's be honest, there is a heck of a lot of material to cover. This book in no way is utterly comprehensive, but this is where it excels...it's simplicity. The boards are mostly about pattern recognition (like medicine) and keying in on buzzwords and commonly tested material. This is where LYW earns its keep.

I reviewed this book thoroughly -- I made it bleed highlighter. After review of a particular system I would try to answer PREP questions related to that system. I then reviewed my highlighting quickly in the few days prior to taking the boards. I would say LYW paired with PREP provided a potent and efficient combination tool to overcoming the most monumental exam in a pediatrician's career. Sure, you can spend months and months wading through minutiae and worrying yourself to death with too many separate resources. But why? My advice is pick 2-3 key resources and know them cold.

I agree with many others that the mnemonics provided in this book are mostly forgettable and were not very helpful for me. However, there were many that I had never heard before and quite liked. Everyone's mileage may vary on this point, but I applaud the author for making an attempt to simplify desert sand dry material into something more memorable. I noted a few mistakes like other reviewers, but the majority of the information is solid.

I am extremely grateful to have passed the boards on my first attempt. After making my way through premed curriculum, the MCAT, getting into a medical school, completing medical school, getting into a residency, passing all 3 general medical boards, and graduating from an ACGME accredited residency program I think we all hope to do the same. I truly feel for those that are not successful in passing and this is why I'm writing this review.

I am glad this book exists and that I can forget about the whole thing...at least for another 10 years, that is. ;-)

Best book out there

This book has been by far the most helpful book. It really helped me pass the pediatric boards with a high score. Many of the tips and tricks highlighted in the book were on the exam. This book was interesting and made studying for the exam easier and less stressful. I would recommend it to anyone who is about to take the pediatric boards.
