Good for the theorist
By Ssound
Its definitely not a book for the every day engineer who wants to design a Butterworth filter, this book covers the hardcore theory behind the different approximation methods for electronic filters. That being said it is a breed between math textbook and engineering textbook, meaning that the author will go into math mode by stating theorems and proofs, but afterwards will return to engineering mode and discuss some of the practicalities of the design. The authors writting style is very clear and concise without being overly formal.

I wouldnt recommend this book if your sole purpose is to design filters quickly and efficiently, nowadays everything is mostly done with software, but for the ones looking to get their hands inside the topic and understand more, then this book is for you.

Deriving Filter Transfer Functions
By Gregory Adams
As the title implies, this book focuses on the Approximation problem, that is formulating the best realizable transfer function for a given filter application. Advanced mathematical topics such as elliptic functions, with which engineers aren't routinely familiar, are covered in detail before they are used to find transfer functions. The book touches on the Synthesis problem, in which the actual filter is designed to provide the desired transfer function. Synthesis procedures are demonstrated for passive LC filters, active filters, and digital filters.

Totally unique in the network (filter) synthesis field
By G. R. White
This book is totally unique in the library of "modern" filter synthesis texts. Its main focus is the so-called "approximation problem" for amplitude centric electronic filters. (Some delay issues are addressed.) Most texts devote (at most) one chapter to the approximation problem, and almost never go beyond the "cookbook" classes (Butterworth, Cheby, Inverse Cheby, Elliptic...) in that single chapter. The bulk of this text -- most of the chapters -- are devoted to the approximation problem. Both "cookbook" classes and non-cookbook approximation problems are covered. "Non-cookbook" means that arbitrary stop-band specifications are covered, as this will result in more efficient circuits. (The filter will not over perform where performance is not needed.)

Dr. Daniels' writing is lucid and concise. He worked for Bell Laboratories, and this was published by Bell Labs. Most likely, Dr. Daniels coded filter synthesis tools for Bell Lab circuit designers. The algorithmic coding given in the book is in a Bell Labs language called "Telcomp II." The syntax of that language is so simple, that the printed algorithms Dr. Daniels provides in Telcomp II can be considered pseudo-code, for practical purposes.

The approximations are mainly performed with the so-called "transformed variable." This is because relevant transfer functions have notoriously ill-conditioned polynomials. In other words, the transformed variable is used to reduce numerical inaccuracies when the algorithms are executed using a digital computer. Conversion equations to the standard complex "s" variable are provided.

Even today, in 2013, many computer synthesis programs rely on the low-pass prototype (as a background method), and only offer "cookbook" approximations. They sometimes do provide for custom stopbands in the low pass prototype. However, the custom low pass proto stopbands are not all that useful for band pass filters, a major class of filters, especially for superhet systems. That is different in this text: "arbitrary" stopbands for band pass filters are covered in wonderful detail. Even the most powerful method -- the parametric filter -- has some coverage (I would like more coverage, but only some other work by Szentirmai, and also Temes, if I remember correctly, has anything even close to this).

I have an extensive library of filter synthesis papers and books. Therefore, I am qualified to make the uniqueness claim for this text. This text is indispensable for the "filter theorist," or anyone interested in how filters are actually created and designed, and wants to get a better idea of what is possible. Again, there is no substitute for this little red book. The more I have read it, the more I have appreciated it. It educated me and changed my outlook like few others. I suppose my biggest regret is that there are no followup editions.

There are other good and necessary filter books for the filter theorist (and synthesis tool programmer), but this one stands alone in what it offers.
