"A fresh multi-faceted look at the overthrow of the Soviet State, the dismemberment of the Soviet Union, and the campaign to introduce capitalism from above. Roger Keeran and Thomas Kenny have given us a clear and powerful Marxist analysis of the momentous events which most directly shaped world politics today, the destruction of the USSR, the 'Superpower' of socialism."

A New Viewpoint on Soviet Collapse Raises New Questions
By A Customer
The interesting aspect of this review is that it provides up-to-date amunition for activists struggling to establish a more humane society in every country of the world. It is not an ivory tower, preachy narrative. On the contrary, it strips away the use of fancy, esoteric terms to present the reality of governmental policies.
These authors clearly have no axe to grind. The preface and introduction bring readers into a book on a level that makes such reading enjoyable. Too often such books, regardless of how important or how much the reader may agree or disagree, are heavy and impossible to get through.
Anyone interested in the demise of the Soviet Union will find this book easy to read and understand. That is a tall order, but one which Keeran and Kenny have achieved. Cudos to them.
The substance of the book tears away prejudices,half-truths stemming from Cold War fears and attacks, and other formulations which leaves all of us ready to repeat history that doesn't and should not be repeated.
The book will tear hard at knee jerk Anti-Soviets; and also, knee jerk pro-Soviets. It will also compel those who want to delete the Soviet experience all together to read on.
The book will put meat on such terms as democracy, totalitarianism, "Stalinism", "social democracy", "democratic socialism," "Leninism," "Marxism" and "Marxism-Leninism" working class democracy and freedom.
Readers and teachers [this book is useful for High School seniors, Undergraduate and graduate students as well as post-doctoral students around the world]won't be able to put this book down. It is a learning experience.
The failure of the Putin regime in Russia; the colloboration of the former Socialist countries with the US/British invastion of Iraq; the continuing popular support of Cuban for their government much to the dismay and anger of the Bush Administration and its Florida allies....all comes into play within the confinds of outcomes of this simple book.
That's a lot to say for a 200 page book, but if you check the long winded academic and government [Brookings, etc] explanations of the Soviet Union demise, you'll agree that Keeran and Kenny have put together a gem that will be widely read, appreciated and acted on.

Socialism Betrayed a "Must Read"
By A Customer
Socialism Betrayed is a "must read" for all who consider themselves "progressive" and "on the left." Its interpretation far surpasses that of other books in the immense literature on the Soviet collapse, the epoch-making event that opened the present age of globalism, U.S. dominance, war and Third World immiseration. Written by two left-wingers sympathetic to Soviet socialism (though they acknowledge its problems), this readable, concise account of the years 1985-1991 breaks new ground with an analysis of the Soviet "second" (private economy), and its corrupting impact on the CPSU and its ideology. Gorbachev had forerunners in Khrushchev and Bukharin. Contrary to the assumptions of U.S. public discourse, popular opposition to the Soviet system resulted from Gorbachev's policies; it did not precede it. The brilliant "Conclusions and Implications" chapter along is worth the price of the book. If the USSR still existed, would Bush have invaded Iraq? Not likely.

History Revealed
By Robert S
Considering that, from its inception, the entire beleaguered history of the USSR was either misinterpreted or disinterpreted by that socialist nation's dedicated transnational class enemies with a vested interest in defeating any real challenge to their economic hegemony, it is not surprising that the destruction of the Soviet Union would be likewise depicted.

However, amid the existing body of published literature purporting to explain the end of the USSR, Roger Keeran's and Thomas Kenny's Socialism Betrayed: Behind the Collapse of the Soviet Union stands out as a sincere and succinct addition (the only other notable worthwhile work on the subject currently available being Bahman Azad's Heroic Struggle, Bitter Defeat), analyzing concretely the outstanding factors actually leading to the collapse as opposed to what professional anti-communists would like to believe (or want the unsuspecting public to believe) caused it, critiquing several false or flawed theories in the process and proposing a theory of their own -- viz., that a "second" (or "black-market" capitalist) economy, operating alongside the "first" (or socialist) one, is what ultimately led to the Soviet demise. However, an illicit "second economy" alone cannot explain the downfall of the USSR nor why this parallel capitalist economy not only remained for so long but even metastasized inside a socialist state. Clearly, the foundations of socialism in the USSR were not as strong as many observers had believed. And the unresolved social contradictions that were manipulated into a crisis situation, combined with other internal as well as external factors, eventually caused the Soviet Union to come undone. Moreover, one of the most serious indictments of Soviet society from a proletarian standpoint (but one not mentioned in this volume or any other that I am aware of) is that it failed to produce a generation of cadre sufficient in numbers and revolutionary zeal to carry on the construction of socialism and communism, notwithstanding the loss of many of the most resolute Bolsheviks in the civil war against assorted imperialist-abetted counter-revolutionaries following the October Revolution and later in the war against fascism.

But Keeran and Kenny are to be commended for throwing much light on a complex subject made complicated for political reasons, and for making their work accessible and useful to a mass readership, and not only an academic one, to determine how the lessons of the Soviet experiment apply to the present situation and our tasks ahead fighting for social equality and real peace.
