Susan Kesner Bland has taught English as a Second Language and English as a Foreign Language in university and adult education programmes in the United States and abroad. She has also taught numerous courses in linguistics and applied linguistics.

This book is excruciatingly effective!

I am a graduate student at Harvard University, and last year I undertook a research project on the effects of written(as opposed to spoken and aural) teaching methods of English as a Second Language. I found Ms. Bland's textbook to be one of the primary examples of a well-written, cohesive, effective textbook. I don't really know how one goes about reviewing a textbook, so please do not consider this to be so much a subjective analysis as a large thank-you to Ms. Bland and as a call to all teachers and students of English looking for a fabulous text upon which to base study.

Best ESL Grammar book yet!

Though I have always loved learning languages and teaching ESL, I have always thought grammar was boring at the least. This grammar book and the ESL teacher-trainer who introduced me to this book completely changed my mind. Learning and teaching English grammar can be interesting and fun! As the title indicates, "Intermediate Grammar: From Form to Meaning and Use" does in a very clear fashion explain the form for each grammar point, but goes way beyond that, focusing on the different meanings that using that point gives to communication, and when and why it is used. After being an ESL and EFL teacher for many years, thinking I already knew most of what there is to know about English grammar, I was surprised by how much of the meaning and use I was not aware of for so many grammar points. Each chapter begins with examples in several situations and a general overview of the meaning and use of the grammar point. It is followed by a chart and explanations of the form for that point that very clearly covers how to form statements, negative statements, yes/no questions, short answers and answers using contractions, information questions and information questions with question words for subject, using that grammar point. Included in that section are notes about how the point is used in conversations versus writing. After a short exercise practicing the form, there is a chart listing various points of meaning and use, followed by separate exercises practicing different uses. At the end is a summary and a summary exercise. The examples and exercises are relevant and natural, not stilted. This book was look a new book event it was a use student book.
I need book soon, but it needed 3 weeks to come since I bought it, but it was ok.
