About the Author
Thormod Morrisson is a runester and tresmi�r (woodcarver) of Norse Scottish extraction with a long interest in Norse, Pictish, Gaelic and Far Eastern traditions. He established Thor's Hammer Woodcraft, based in Scotland. His interest in ancient mysticism has been an enduring one.

runes and a lot more

What I thought was going to be yet another routine book on runes turned out to be much more. The author tries
to give us a comprehensive book on Northern Europe's culture of myth, magic, religion, spiritual practices and
history. Runes are just a big part of this equation. There are even some beautiful illustrations of wood carvings
of the gods! ( the author is also a woodcarver! )
What surprised me most was his inclusion of much of Celtic culture and history. Celtic and Norse myth and magic are many times treated separately, but Morrisson is aware that there was much interaction between these two great northern cultures, so they are treated together almost as a whole.
I had some issues with the interpretation of the runes; a bit too speculative for me. Also, some of his comparative methods between different cultures seemed to me to be a bit of a stretch. I was confused to find that the Norse gods such as Thor and Odin were represented by the older Celtic trinity Taranis, Esus and Teutates. Then again, I'm not up on the latest research.
But overall a fun and fascinating book, with some funny stories from medieval northern writings.

Know little about this subject at the beginning never really held me back. The material is in a very readable format which takes the reader into the the world we all glossed over in history books.

I found this book enjoyable as the author clearly knows his subject material, and he is able to clearly present his perspective on the runes. You can't go wrong with this one.
