Becoming Faulkner: The Art and Life of William Faulkner, by Philip Weinstein

William Faulkner was the greatest American novelist of the twentieth century, yet he lived a life marked by a pervasive sense of failure. Throughout his career, he remained haunted by his inability to master a series of personal and professional challenges: his less-than-heroic military career; the loss of his brother in an airplane crash; a disappointing stint as a Hollywood screenwriter; and a destructive bout with alcoholism. In this imaginative biography, Philip Weinstein--a leading authority on the great novelist--targets Faulkner's embattled sense of self as central to both his life and his work. Weinstein shows how Faulkner's troubled interactions with time, place, and history--with antebellum practices and racial division--take on their fullest meanings in his fiction. Exploring the resonance of his own unpreparedness, Faulkner invented a singular language that captured human consciousness under stress as never before. Becoming Faulkner joins Faulkner's life and art in a bold new way, giving readers a full vantage from which to better understand this twentieth-century literary genius.

Weinstein shows how Faulkner's troubled interactions with time, place, and history--with antebellum practices and southern heritage--form a pattern that played out over the course of his entire life. At the same time, these incidents take on their fullest meanings in his fiction. It was in meditating on his failures, his own unreadiness, Weinstein argues, that Faulkner came up with his singular language, one that captured human consciousness under stress as never before. His fruitless striving catapulted American literature to a new level of sophistication.

Narrating the events that comprised Faulkner's life, biographers have long struggled to depict his personal complexity, the paradoxes that shaped his decisions and dogged his relationships. But without a consideration of the writing as well, the troubles in the life fail to reveal their deeper resonance. By skillfully analyzing the work while tracing the events, Weinstein achieves a full portrait, revealing struggles that animate his life and shadows that complicate his work. Becoming Faulkner thus conjoins Faulkner's life and art in a bold new way, giving readers a full vantage from which to better understand this twentieth-century literary genius.

Review

"In an earlier study, Weinstein offered the lapidary observation that Faulker 'was hurt into greatness.' Becoming Faulkner elaborates powerfully, and often brilliantly, on that claim...Along the way we are treated to breathtaking flashes of insight." --The Southern Register

"Philip Weinstein... has written a deeply felt, spellbinding, lyrically written tale of Faulkner's art and life, how each bred and interpenetrated the other, a dynamic dialectic of doom and hope, sex and sensibility, Southern myth and personal agonies." -- Providence Journal

"Becoming Faulkner gives Faulkner's readers a powerfully original account of how the author's tortured but fiercely guarded personal life informed his creative one. Weinstein brilliantly renders Faulkner's struggles with unconquerable difficulties-family disasters and doomed loves, the maelstrom of Southern racial conflict, flights toward self-destruction, the intolerability of success-to provide an unprecedented and invaluable affective life of the writer."-John Matthews, Boston University

"Intricately weaving together the intense struggles that Faulkner confronted in a life fraught with personal and cultural conflicts with the works of genius he produced both out of, and in the face of, those conflicts, Becoming Faulkner is brave, bold, and brilliant. Weinstein's unorthodox approach to Faulkner's life and art delivers a stunningly original grasp of both. A landmark book in Faulkner Studies."-Carolyn Porter, University of California, Berkeley

"Faulkner has a reputation of being a writer difficult to read and understand, yet in this wonderfully illuminating book, Philip Weinstein shows us a way in. By revealing how Faulkner's writing is a uniquely faithful rendering of human life as it is actually lived rather than as it is usually written about, Weinstein explains why Faulkner-a man of terrifying openness-invented a whole new way of writing to capture trouble as it is being experienced, before we can grasp its significance. Seen from this perspective, Faulkner's novels take on sudden clarity. Everyone who reads fiction, as well as all Faulkner lovers, will not want to miss this remarkable book."-Carol Gilligan, author of In a Different Voice and Kyra

"Weinstein acknowledges that although Faulkner would have protested this glimpse into his tormented private world, he also would have recognized the portrait as true. What more can one ask of a biographer? This rich work will be well received by Faulknerian students and scholars. Highly recommended."-Library Journal

"At a time when over-stuffed biographies and specialist criticism have left our major literary figures more dissected than understood, Weinstein gives us his most profound, ambitious, and loving work, a book that captures the Faulkner that matters-the mess of the life caught up inextricably with the power of his novels. Whether you've read Faulkner, or studied him, or simply always wanted to grasp his importance to American literature, Becoming Faulkner offers as rich and pleasurable a journey into his great achievements as you'll ever find."-Adam Haslett, author of You Are Not a Stranger Here and Union Atlantic

"Writing," says Weinstein, near the end of this thoughtful book, "was how Faulkner reckoned with what had happened to him in life." He experienced as drama the endless contradictions and contrarieties that merged in his consciousness, translating them into prose that outlasted him. The task of making fiction was inextricably linked with the process of "becoming Faulkner"; serious readers of Faulkner will be grateful to Weinstein for what he tells us about this strange, often painful, process." --American Scholar

"Becoming Faulkner delivers what we all want but so seldom get from a literary biography: genuine insight into how its subject's life engendered great work. It is critically persuasive, concisely informative, admirable in its balancing of sympathy and judgment, and thoroughly enjoyable to read." --Jonathan Franzen, author of Freedom

One of the Best Books About Faulkner
By Brian Cleveland
I have read and re-read a great deal of Faulkner over the years, including several biographies and studies. This volume is truly insightful and inspiring. So much literary criticism is self-serving and over-reaching, but in this you are presented with ideas that I think even Bill himself would approve of: a must for any Faulkner student.

A brilliant literary study
By Jared Smith
This is one of the best books I have read not just on Faulkner's work, but on the work of any writer. It needs to go on the very short list of "must reads" for literary studies. I wish more academics and authors in general would approach artists like this.

A Faulkner Biography to Get Lost In
By J. T. Cox
I am by no means an accomplished literary scholar, but having written my master's thesis on Faulkner years ago, I'm not exactly a stranger either to Weinstein's subject or the discipline from which it emerges. I won't trouble the reader by breaking down the entire text in this venue, but I do want to say that I think Philip Weinstein has hit the proverbial nail on the head with this biography. He has distilled the essence of Faulkner down to the artist's experience and understanding of time, specifically that each of us is never prepared for the unforeseen calamities that suddenly befall us during the course of our lives, and that it is retrospect that gives us a sense of continuity and identity. In other words, we become ourselves in the past tense only, never or rarely in the present moment, especially when those moments are visited upon us as challenges and difficulties with all their attendant murkiness. When Faulkner states that "the past is never dead; it's not even past," it becomes more than an eccentric line composed by a writer enamored with the history of his family and region when viewed through the prism of Weinstein's analysis. Once we understand that our very identities are constructed from a glance cast backward across our lived experience -- providing we are inclined to accept such a view -- we understand how, indeed, the past can never be dead.

The book covers through five chapters key events/issues in the subject's life that Weinstein interprets as being critical junctures for Faulkner, and together with each of these events Weinstein weaves together both the details of an artist's life and brief, erudite discussions of the literature that emerged from his lived experience. There is nothing taxing about Weinstein's biography. His prose is well-crafted and his scholarship first-rate. What is absolutely amazing about this book is how Weinstein manages to get so much into so little space (a mere 237 pages of text) and in such a way that the reader can become lost in Faulkner's world without being buried alive in it.

While Joseph Blotner's two-volume work will remain the bible of Faulkner biographies because of its exhaustive treatment, I think that Philip Weinstein's will become the definitive synthesis of Faulkner's life and work: a truly impressive and much-appreciated achievement.

Excellent
By Marj
This is an excellent and conprehensive coverage of a subject that is almost taboo. For instance, no-one ever mentions that the usual operation for prostate cancer is orchidectomy - castration. (Though even now I'm unsure about that. It is almost always glossed over.)
5 stars means 'I love it.' One doesn't really 'love' a well researched book of non-fiction, but certainly I thought it excellent.
Well done, Mr. Cheney.

I'm glad I only borrowed it
By M. E. McCombs
Note: I borrowed this book from the library prior to committing to purchasing it. I'm glad I only borrowed it.

Mr. Cheney’s book, A Brief History of Castration, is often touted as one of the better histories on eunuchs and castration. Since it’s one of a very small number of books on this topic, that is no surprise. However, the book suffers from several problems that make it difficult to accept any of the scholarship contained within it as factual. First, it has a number of factual errors, commonly known factual errors, which a simple Google search or a scan of elementary material – even an encyclopedia – would have pointed out. As a glaring example, Mr. Cheney states that Nefertiti had six sons by Akhenaten, though he uses a variant spelling not commonly accepted anymore, when she actually had six daughters. There are few notes used at the end of the various chapters despite him quoting liberal from a variety of authors in each of the essays which make up the book. Next, there are a vast number of editing mistakes including the much one of Mr. Cheney referring to the apostles Peter and Paul as “princesses of the church”. And finally, it’s obvious that Mr. Cheney had an agenda of touting castration as a “cure” for sexual aggression and violence as well as for pedophilia as much of the final sections of the book is spent in praise of eunuchs who were members of the early church and of the castrati who used to sing in religious services. He devotes on section on how castrated persons do not recommit crimes such as rape and pedophilia. In all, I am unable to recommend this book to anyone due to the problems and lack of proper sourcing of material.

Interesting
By P. G. McFinnigan
I bought this because I am terribly bad at impulse buying heh heh but I think the material is interesting. The product is exactly as described and contains some interesting thoughts and ways of looking at masculinity that aren't usually discussed. I would recommend it if you, like myself, just like "knowing things" for no particular reason, or if you have to have a procedure done yourself and are worried about it. As far as I can tell, this is a fairly rare commodity perspective-wise. Sure there is more information about the subject out there, but this isn't "The Extended History of Castration." If you're looking for a quick, unique read, I would grab it.

Creating Classrooms for Authors and Inquirers, Second Edition, by Carolyn Burke, Jerome Harste, Kathy Short

How do you set up supportive classrooms in which children can become real readers, writers, and inquirers? Can it be done every day, across the curriculum?

In the first edition, Short, Harste, and Burke presented practical theory of literacy instruction based on their work with classroom teachers. Their aim was to show practicing and preservice elementary teachers how to create the best possible literacy-learning environment.

In this second edition, the authors offer more ideas and rich descriptions of how their curriculum moved from writing and reading to include inquiry. Creating Classrooms for Authors and Inquirersrepresents their latest thinking, along with lingering questions and new concerns.

The first half of the book focuses on the authoring cycle and the ways in which Short, Harste, Burke, and other teacher-researchers have used the cycle as a curricular framework. The authors share their work within the writing curriculum, then move to the reading curriculum, and finally to rethinking curriculum as inquiry. They also discuss issues related to maintaining a community of inquirers.

The second half of the book contains more detailed descriptions of curricular engagements within the authoring cycle framework, such as authors folder, bookmaking, and readers theatre. These classroom strategies have already worked for hundreds of teachers, and Short, Harste, and Burke are at their practical best as they share them with you. Extensive samples of student work are included.

The ideas and experiences expressed in this volume are the result of a group of people who have worked together, thought together, and built from the work of others over time. Creating Classrooms for Authors and Inquirers is a resource you will refer to again and again.

Three Years Later, and This Still Ranks As The Best

I used this book while earning my Masters of Teaching in Early Childhood Education. It gives a superb presentation on how to put down the 1950s/60s style of teaching reading by using an investigative approach.

I hope that they up date it soon.

Alfred H. Barr, Jr. and the Intellectual Origins of the Museum of Modern Art (MIT Press), by Sybil Kantor

Growing up with the twentieth century, Alfred Barr (1902-1981), founding director of the Museum of Modern Art, harnessed the cataclysm that was modernism. In this book -- part intellectual biography, part institutional history -- Sybil Gordon Kantor tells the story of the rise of modern art in America and of the man responsible for its triumph. Following the trajectory of Barr's career from the 1920s through the 1940s, Kantor penetrates the myths, both positive and negative, that surround Barr and his achievements.

Barr fervently believed in an aesthetic based on the intrinsic traits of a work of art and the materials and techniques involved in its creation. Kantor shows how this formalist approach was expressed in the organizational structure of the multidepartmental museum itself, whose collections, exhibitions, and publications all expressed Barr's vision. At the same time, she shows how Barr's ability to reconcile classical objectivity and mythic irrationality allowed him to perceive modernism as an open-ended phenomenon that expanded beyond purist abstract modernism to include surrealist, nationalist, realist, and expressionist art.

Drawing on interviews with Barr's contemporaries as well as on Barr's extensive correspondence, Kantor also paints vivid portraits of, among others, Jere Abbott, Katherine Dreier, Henry-Russell Hitchcock, Philip Johnson, Lincoln Kirstein, Agnes Mongan, J. B. Neumann, and Paul Sachs.

From Library Journal

A handful of figures contributed to the establishment of modern art in the U.S. museum community: Juliana Force (Whitney Museum of American Art), Chick Austen (Wadsworth Atheneum), Duncan Phillips (Phillips Collection), and, preeminently, Alfred H. Barr Jr. In a book that serves as both a biography of Barr and a textbook on the theoretical foundation of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, independent scholar Kantor focuses on the philosophical underpinnings of Barr's early life. He explores in great depth the philosophers, teachers, collectors, artists, and others who helped to form the mind of MoMA's founding director (Barr was a mere 27 at the time of his appointment). Barr's important and influential colleagues (Lincoln Kirstein, Agnes Mongan, Henry-Russell Hitchcock, Philip Johnson, and others from both inside and outside of MoMA) are placed in historical and personal context. This excellent treatment explores Barr's contribution both to modern art in America and to many of the museum practices that are now taken for granted. For a more traditional biographical treatment, see Alice Goldfarb Marquis's Alfred H. Barr, Jr.: Missionary for the Modern (LJ 4/15/89). Highly recommended for all collections with an interest in 20th-century art. Martin R. Kalfatovic, Smithsonian Inst. Libs., Washington, DC

Review

An important contribution to the historiography of twentieth-century American art... intellectual and biographical history at its most rigorous.

(Daniel A. Siedell College Art Association Reviews)

Alfred Hamilton Barr Jr. remains a figure of fascination and contention.

(Michael Kimmelman The New York Review of Books)

It is to the intellectual history of modern art that [this book] makes an indispensible contribution.

(Hilton Kramer The New Criterion)

This truly significant book is at times as compulsively readable as a novel. Yet the spell that the author casts does not come at the expense of rigorous argument backed up by exhaustive primary documentation and pertinent secondary references.

(Helen Searing, Alice Pratt Brown Professor of Art, Smith College)

A worthy contribution to the literature. Kantor's book is the most detailed and revelatory account of Barr's approach to modern art ever published.

(Francis M. Naumann, author of Marcel Duchamp: The Art of Making Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction)

At last, Alfred Barr's towering stature as scholarship art historian, evangelical educator, and visionary museum director has been given its due. Meticulously documented, Kantor's study recreates not only the formation, step-by-step, of Barr's unique genius but also the audacious intellectual milieu of the 1920s that nurtured it.

(Robert Rosenblum, Professor of Fine Arts, New York University)
